Gelli prints, painting like Gustav Klimt, and Painting Little Abstracts

In this workshop, we will start out with the latest big craze, gelli printing. This is a monoprinting process that is so easy and fun. It involves using a brayer and turning the paper face side down onto a stenciled surface covered with acrylic. It’s always like Christmas; the excitement of uncovering your paper to see what you have! Then we will turn these handmade papers into a painting on Day 2.

We will be painting like Gustav Klimt on Days 3 and 4, and will get to doodle to our heart’s content. Acrylic actually makes this process easier. This workshop will emphasize good design and lots of tricks to make the detail work easier. We will also be working with several different types of metallic special effects and will be studying Gustav Klimt’s paintings.

Day 5 will be painting a little 6” x 6” abstract that will again use some of your gelli printing papers, OR you may choose to just finish the paintings that you’ve been working on all week. So, this is a mixed bag of tricks! Come ready to have a good time! (There will be a small fee for skeleton leaves and printing paper.)

If you want to take your traditional paintings to an abstract level, this is the workshop for you! This workshop will let you explore many different medias, including watercolor, acrylic, and charcoal pours. One day, we will prepare the surface with heavy gel medium creating a texture to indicate rows in a field. Another neat technique will be charcoal pours where we actually pour a big bucket of water on the surface to make the charcoal radiate on the surface. Acrylic layering will create a patchwork appearance. There will be a $10 supply fee so that students won’t have to invest in big amounts of some of the materials. (Karen will bring the unusual items for all to use.) This is Karen’s third time back teaching at Dillman’s. She is a very popular workshop instructor who believes that painting should be fun and easy, but with good design!

Karen Knutson will teach her approach to painting like Gustav Klimt, using acrylic paints.  Creating paintings that include tricks on how to produce tiny shapes like those in Klimt’s paintings. Students will doodle to their heart’s content in this workshop. Intermediate students will have no trouble with the drawing, etc. because Karen has some easy painting  tips. Several different types of metallic special effects will be shown and they will be studying Gustav Klimt’s paintings. Design tips will also be shared. Finishing touches are such fun! One day, Wire drawing will be shown.  This is a process where the students draw, using a permanent marker.  The reason that it is called “wire drawing” is that the end result resembles a wire sculpture.  This is Karen’s favorite technique ever!  It makes everyone a better drawer and is so meditative at the same time.  These 2 workshops are Karen’s most popular workshops!

Day One will be used to prepare 2 papers for the Klimt process.  We also will learn the art of “wire drawing” on this day. Subject is

student’s choice.  I’ve done wire drawings of birds, people, and animals.   Days 2 and 3, students will learn how to paint the “Klimt” way, utilizing rubber shaper tools, credit cards to pull paint across the surface, adding water to create texture, scraping into the paint to create scratch marks, stamping with homemade stamps or purchased stamps, and layering with different colors to create depth.  Karen will also be discussing good design and share some great composition tricks. If students want to add collage on the third day, that is optional.

“I give demonstrations both in the morning and the afternoon.  The afternoon demo is shorter than the morning one.  I will give individual attention all throughout the day.  This workshop is a great introduction to acrylics if you have never used them before.  It’s my most popular workshop!   I love the vibrancy of color when I use acrylics.”

Karen Knutson is back to Yakima by popular demand!   Karen will teach her approach to painting people with abstract backgrounds. Students will use watercolor and Karen’s tips and tricks to produce groups of people the easy way.  Students will have no trouble with the drawing because Karen has some easy painting and design tips.  We will be using a non-permanent marker called the Elegant Writer calligraphy pen.  It’s great because is smears when it is wet.  As always, design and simplification will be discussed so that you will have outstanding paintings.  Finishing touches will bring an exciting element to your completed work.

Karen states:  “These paintings are meant to be fun loving and free.   No portrait painting here! We’ll paint outline shapes of people in the distance.  I kiddingly call these, “clothespin people”.  Remember the old fashioned wooden clothespins?  I think they look a little bit like that. This class will take the fear out of painting people!”

If you are interested, I would recommend registering RIGHT AWAY, because this one fills fast and space is limited. The cost is only $115 for the 2 Day workshop.

On Day 1, we will learn an easy way to draw a funky lady.  No portrait painting here!  This is one of Karen Knutson’s most popular workshops.  Imagination is key!  No reference photos needed.  Students will learn a step by step drawing process, and the kookier the better!  We like imperfections!  After completing the easy drawing, we will paint with watercolors, doodle with markers, and then embellish them with rhinestones.  Karen believes that painting should be fun, and gives lots of individual help.

On days 2 and 3, we will learn an easy fun way to paint an underpainting, using acrylics.  No drawing skills needed.  Karen has lots of tricks to make drawing people easy.  We will get to doodle to our heart’s content in this workshop.  Acrylic actually makes this process so fun and easy. Craft acrylic paints (available at Michaels) can be used for this process, so this will be an introduction into acrylics that won’t break the bank.  This workshop will emphasize good design and lots of tricks to make the detail work easier.  We actually paint using a credit card to begin the process!  Students always LOVE this process!

This workshop will start with everyone learning how to paint little abbeys, which is Karen’s nickname for small abstracts (5” x 7”.  These are “no fail” small abstracts that are so fun to do and they take the fear out of doing abstracts.  Students will learn how to think about glowing colors and also will learn the process of adding collage.  Then on days 2 and 3, students will use one of their “little abbeys” as a starting point to produce at least a half sheet painting, using watercolor and collage.  They can choose whether they want something semi-abstract or a completely abstract painting.  Karen starts every painting, thinking in terms of simple shapes, and good design and she will be teaching many design tips as the days progress.  Fun easy techniques, such as graphite and metallic will be shared too, so everyone will be excited to add special effects to make their paintings stand out from the crowd!  Karen has been teaching watercolor, collage, and acrylic workshops for 25 years and teaches workshops all across the United States.  She gives lots of individual help as well as fun demonstrations.
